The Well, the Woman, and the Word

John 4 recounts the powerful and intimate encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. What begins as a simple request for a drink turns into one of the most theologically profound and transformative conversations in the Gospels.

This chapter reveals Jesus as the Living Water, the Bridegroom, the Prophet, and the Savior of the world. It also shows the heart of true worship—and the beauty of divine mercy that seeks out the outcast and thirsty.

Verse-by-Verse Catholic Commentary

4:1–6
“Jesus, tired from His journey, sat down at the well.”

  • The setting recalls Old Testament betrothal scenes (e.g., Isaac, Jacob, Moses), signaling a new covenant relationship between God and His people.

  • Jesus is fully human—He is tired, thirsty, vulnerable.
