Day 3: The Baptism of Jesus
Embracing Our Identity as God’s Children
Scripture Reading: Matthew 3:13-17
"After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. And a voice from heaven said, 'This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.'" (Matthew 3:16-17, NLT)
Reflection: Jesus’ Baptism and Our Identity
The baptism of Jesus marks the beginning of His public ministry and reveals His identity as the beloved Son of God. Though Jesus was without sin, He chose to be baptized by John to fulfill all righteousness and to set an example for us. In this profound moment, we see the Trinity—the Father’s voice, the Son in the water, and the Spirit descending as a dove—affirming the mission of Jesus and His unique relationship with the Father.
For us, baptism is a sacrament that marks our entry into the family of God. Just as Jesus’ identity was affirmed at His baptism, so too is ours. We are claimed as God’s beloved children, washed clean of sin, and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live as followers of Christ. This moment calls us to reflect on our own baptism and the identity and mission we have been given.
Personal Reflection:
When I think about Jesus’ baptism, I’m reminded of the powerful words: "This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy." As a father myself, I know the joy of seeing my children grow, learn, and thrive. It’s humbling to realize that God sees me—and all of us—with that same love and pride. Yet, I often struggle to live as though I truly believe I’m God’s beloved child. This reflection challenges me to embrace that identity fully and trust in God’s love for me.
Application: Living as God’s Beloved
The story of Jesus’ baptism invites us to embrace our identity as beloved children of God and live out our baptismal calling.
Remember Your Baptism: Take time today to reflect on your baptism and what it means to you. If you don’t remember it, consider reading the Rite of Baptism or asking a loved one about the day you were baptized. Renew your commitment to live as a disciple of Christ.
Live with Purpose: Just as Jesus’ baptism marked the beginning of His mission, our baptism calls us to live with purpose. Ask yourself: How can I reflect God’s love and grace in my family, work, and community?
Rely on the Holy Spirit: The Spirit of God descended upon Jesus at His baptism, equipping Him for His ministry. Trust in the Holy Spirit to guide and strengthen you in your daily life. Invite the Spirit into your decisions, struggles, and joys.
Action Step:
Today, take a moment to renew your baptismal promises. You can do this silently in prayer or by reciting them during a quiet time. Remind yourself that you are God’s beloved child and consider one specific way you can live out this identity today.

Heavenly Father, thank You for claiming me as Your beloved child through baptism. Help me to live out this identity with courage and purpose. Fill me with Your Spirit, that I may reflect Your love and grace in all I do. May I always walk in the confidence of knowing I am Yours. Amen.
