Scripture Reading: Matthew 19:13-15
"But Jesus said, 'Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.'" (Matthew 19:14, NLT)
Reflection: The Heart of a Child
In this passage, parents bring their children to Jesus, seeking His blessing. The disciples, however, try to send them away, perhaps believing that children were unimportant compared to Jesus’ other work. Jesus’ response is striking: He welcomes the children and declares that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like them.
Childlike faith is not about immaturity but about possessing qualities such as trust, humility, wonder, and dependence on God. Children approach life with an open heart and an eagerness to learn. Jesus calls us to adopt these same attitudes in our relationship with Him. The invitation to come to Jesus is open to everyone, regardless of age or status, reminding us that we are all beloved children of God.
Personal Reflection:
This passage reminds me of the joy and simplicity I see in children. Their ability to trust and find delight in the smallest things inspires me to approach my faith with a similar heart. When I’ve faced challenges, it’s often been childlike trust in God’s love that has carried me through. Reflecting on this reminds me to let go of my need to control and instead rest in the assurance that I am His beloved child.
Application: Cultivating Childlike Faith
To embrace childlike faith, we must learn to trust God completely, surrendering our fears and doubts. Here are ways to cultivate this faith in your daily life:
Trust in God’s Goodness: Like a child trusts a loving parent, trust that God’s plans for you are good. Surrender your worries to Him and rely on His care.
Approach God with Humility: Children know they are dependent on others. Recognize your need for God in every area of your life and come to Him with an open heart.
Rediscover Wonder: Take time to marvel at God’s creation and His works in your life. Gratitude and awe deepen your connection to Him.
Be Open to Learning: Children are eager to learn and grow. Commit to deepening your understanding of Scripture and God’s will for your life.
Action Step:
Spend a few moments reflecting on what it means to have childlike faith. Identify one area of your life where you struggle to trust God fully. Offer this area to Him in prayer, asking for the grace to rely on Him as a child relies on a parent.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for welcoming me into Your Kingdom as Your child. Teach me to trust You completely, to approach You with humility, and to delight in Your presence. Help me to let go of my fears and embrace the simplicity of childlike faith. May my heart always be open to Your love and guidance. Amen.
