Scripture Reading: Mark 3:13-19
"Afterward Jesus went up on a mountain and called out the ones he wanted to go with him. And they came to him. Then he appointed twelve of them and called them his apostles. They were to accompany him, and he would send them out to preach, giving them authority to cast out demons." (Mark 3:13-15, NLT)
Reflection: A Call to Follow and Serve
In this passage, Jesus chooses twelve ordinary men to be His closest companions and to carry out His mission. These disciples, later known as apostles, came from diverse backgrounds but were united by their call to follow Jesus. They were not chosen for their perfection or qualifications but for their willingness to respond to His invitation.
Jesus’ choice to work through a community reminds us of the importance of relationships in our faith journey. We are not meant to walk this path alone. Just as the disciples were called to accompany Jesus and support one another, we are called to be part of a faith-filled community where we can grow, serve, and carry out God’s mission together.
Personal Reflection:
When I think about the twelve disciples, I’m struck by how ordinary they were. They had flaws and struggles, yet Jesus saw their potential and called them to a greater purpose. This reminds me that God doesn’t expect perfection from me—only a willingness to follow and serve. It also encourages me to value the faith community around me, knowing we are stronger when we walk this journey together.
Application: Building Your Faith Community
The example of the twelve disciples challenges us to embrace both the call to follow Jesus personally and the call to build relationships within a community of believers. Here are ways to live this out:
Respond to Jesus’ Call: Reflect on how Jesus is calling you to accompany Him. Are there specific ways He is inviting you to serve or grow in your faith?
Invest in Community: Be intentional about building relationships with fellow believers. Join a Bible study, participate in parish activities, or reach out to someone who shares your faith.
Support One Another: Like the disciples, we are called to support each other in our faith journeys. Offer encouragement, prayer, and practical help to those in your community.
Embrace Your Role in God’s Mission: The disciples were sent out to preach and serve. Consider how you can use your unique gifts to share the Gospel and make a difference in the lives of others.
Action Step:
Take a step toward building or strengthening your faith community this week. Reach out to someone in your church or small group, invite a friend to pray with you, or join a new ministry or group activity.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me to follow You and for surrounding me with a community of believers. Help me to respond to Your call with faith and to support others in their journey with You. Teach me to use my gifts for Your glory and to build relationships that reflect Your love. May my life be a testament to the power of Your call. Amen.
