Bridging Faiths: My Experience with a Protestant Men's Group
Finding Common Ground in a Journey of Faith and Understanding
Recently, I embarked on a journey to find a men's group within the Catholic Church, but my search came up empty. Determined to connect with other men and study the Bible, I decided to attend a Protestant men's group at a mega church in Southern California. My goal was not to bring the Catholic perspective into the group but to connect with God and other men.
As I sat in my car, I hesitated, wondering if my Catholic faith would be an issue. Despite my concerns, I entered a large room filled with about ten tables and chose one with six other men. We began with a prayer, and the group asked about my church affiliation. I explained that I was Catholic but emphasized that I was there to connect with God and others, not to debate faiths.
The meeting proceeded with prayer requests, and then we delved into a study of a book, focusing on a chapter about idols. The team leader immediately framed the chapter as a critique of the Catholic Church, discussing topics like salvation, praying to saints, and purgatory. I felt a nudge from God to speak up, especially when the leader misrepresented Catholic beliefs about salvation.

I clarified that Catholics do not believe in working for salvation. Instead, we work out our salvation, akin to nurturing a marriage after the vows are exchanged. On the topic of praying to saints, I compared it to asking friends for prayers, highlighting that it's not mandatory but a source of support.
When the discussion turned to purgatory, I acknowledged that the term isn't in the Bible, much like the concept of the Trinity. I explained that purgatory is about purification, referencing 1 Corinthians 3:11-15, which the Catholic Church interprets as purgatory. Some men began to see my perspective, expressing gratitude for the clarification.
My intent was not to convert anyone but to foster understanding. Despite the team leader's growing frustration, I appreciated the opportunity to share my faith. As the meeting concluded, I thanked the group and left, unsure if I'd be invited back.
Reflecting on the experience, I realized the importance of questioning our beliefs and seeking truth. While we may not always agree, it's crucial to recognize that we're all on the same team, striving for a deeper connection with God.
